Theraplay therapist in Asheville NC: Helping families find their joy

.

I do two things. They’re similar, but not the same.

#1: I offer full service parent and child therapy in person. We’ll start out with some adults-only telehealth sessions, but the vast majority of our work will be face-to-face in my office in Asheville. Your child will be in there with us. We’ll play, use our whole bodies and nervous systems, get big and loud, get small and quiet, talk, draw, paint, move, and find the magic in being fully present and attuned in real time. Everyone will feel better.

#2: For families outside of Asheville, I offer online-only parenting support. I’ll bring most of the same tools to these sessions, but you don’t have to drive here to do the work. Your child won’t be part of the work, because online-only formats with little kids are a disaster (learned that in 2020!). We’ll leverage your relationship with your child to help him/her/them settle, feel heard and seen, and remember how good it can feel to be in connection. Everyone will feel better.

Fees:

  • $175/hour
  • I have 4 spots reserved for reduced fee clients. If you need a reduced fee, let’s discuss it.
  • I’ve recently made the hard decision to no longer contract with any insurance companies directly. My experience in the past few years is that only about one in twenty or so clients of mine accrue enough medical fees in one year to have their plans actually cover services. Considering the large amount of sensitive information the companies require me to provide, and the low rates they allow for family therapy (usually about two-thirds to a half of what they pay for individual work), I’m ditching them.

Some methods of therapy I use

  • At my practice in Asheville, NC, I use Theraplay ® for children and families with trauma, anxiety, depression, behavioral problems, and adoption issues. I’ve written a blog post explaining it in more detail: https://drcatherinetucker.com/what-is-a-theraplay-session-like/
  • I have studied with Dr. Stephen Porges to learn more about how the nervous systems in the body process trauma and stress.  Dr. Porges is a widely respected expert on mammalian trauma responses. You can learn more here.
  • EMDR is a powerful, evidence-based method for separating negative emotions from the memories that cause them most often (see EMDRIA.com for information). I use this with clients of all ages who need to process trauma.
  • Expressive arts (drawing, painting, clay, etc.) are helpful for some clients.
